Melissa and Andrew’s Iconic Minneapolis Wedding at St. Mark’s Cathedral
My meeting Melissa and Andrew was pure serendipity. I was chatting with another engaged couple at Common Roots Cafe (I love their lavender lattes) and afterwards Melissa tapped my shoulder to ask if I happened to be a wedding photographer. She and Andrew were having trouble finding a photographer to capture their relaxed, candid vision for their wedding day and wondered if I could help.
It was a perfect match.
Melissa and Andrew had an iconic Minneapolis love story. Both newcomers to the city, they met attending services at St. Mark’s Cathedral, fell in love walking through St. Anthony Main and Andrew proposed on the Stone Arch Bridge (after a show at the Guthrie, of course.) See their engagement photos on the bridge - they’re so sweet.
They wanted their wedding to be a love note to the city without feeling formal or posed. In their words “We don’t want to spend our wedding day in a photoshoot; we want to have a wonderful day with our community, and then happen to have photos at the end of it.”
Melissa and Andrew met as members of St. Mark’s congregation, so for them, there was no other place to celebrate their marriage. They both got ready at the cathedral. Book-lover Melissa in the library with her mom, bridesmaids and niece. Andrew, in a very relaxed way, playing Magic with his closest groomsfolk. How cute is Melissa comparing sparkly shoes with her niece?
The "First Look"
While I usually recommend that couples have a first look, I was excited to help Melissa and Andrew have a private moment before the ceremony without actually seeing each other. So we created a ‘blind’ first look, where the couple could exchange gifts and romantic words, but still see each other for the first time at the altar. I love how you can feel Andrew’s excitement as he desperately tries not to look at Melissa.
Melissa and Andrew said their vows with a meaningful Episcopal ceremony. I love the grand cathedral setting and how incandescently happy Melissa looks walking down the aisle.
Relaxed Wedding Portraits
Even though Melissa and Andrew didn’t want to focus on posed portraits, I made sure we captured some of the city’s magic sunset light. After the ceremony, I walked through Loring Park with the couple on the way to their reception at Cafe Lurcat and caught some of their first sweet moments together as husband and wife.
The Wedding Reception at Cafe Lurcat
Both Melissa and Andrew wanted great food at their reception and chose Cafe Lurcat to host the party. It was the perfect place for their loving group of family and friends to toast, laugh, celebrate and dance the night away.
Melissa and Andrew, I am so thankful that the universe (and Common Roots Cafe) brought us together. I’ve loved getting to know you both and seeing Minneapolis fresh through your eyes. Thank you for giving me a window into your relationship and trusting me with your vision. Congratulations Melissa and Andrew!
