Newborn photoshoots with me follow 'baby time', which means I block off up to 4 hours for the session (even though a session might wrap up in 45 min!) to leave unhurried space for feedings, diaper changes, and soothing. Carter was sleeping peacefully when I arrived, so I spent some time talking with Danika and Blake, reviewing the game plan, and inviting them to share any additional photo ideas or meaningful details they wanted to capture for their newborn session.
Read MoreJen and Eric decided on a portrait-focused structure for their lifestyle and newborn session, with an emphasis on capturing lovely, emotion-filled, and natural-feeling images of Jen, Eric, Theodora, and baby Esther in their home. We also wove in a few candid, storytelling moments to capture the everyday rhythms of life with a toddler and a newborn – including reading books, snuggling on the couch, and watching Theodora hold her baby sister Esther.
Read MoreSari and John wanted their newborn pictures to feel storytelling and candid– capturing an authentic window into their everyday lives with a new baby. They loved the idea of documenting tender baby details unique to this time (like baby A’s tiny toes and hands), and they also wanted the portraits to honor the layers of relationship in their family – each of their individual relationships with their new son, their relationship as a couple navigating the transition into parenthood together, and their relationship as a loving, connected family of three.
Read MoreMelissa and Andrew treasure the portraits they have of Owen as a newborn, so they wanted this lifestyle session to include portraits that also felt cozy, candid, and storytelling. They chose to have the photoshoot in their charming South Minneapolis home in order to document the everydayness of life as a family with a toddler and a newborn. Their toddler Owen was out of the house at daycare for most of the photoshoot, so that Melissa and Andrew could share some moments alone with their newborn, but he came home in time to take some full family portraits.
Read MoreWe began the day taking some portraits of just baby A all snuggled up on the bed, but this didn’t last long as little E was so eager to snuggle and be photographed with her sister. These portraits where E grins, giggles, hugs, holds, kisses, and plays with baby A are some of my favorite portraits of the day. They feel so precious and storytelling as they document the authentic enthusiasm little E has for being a big sister and how much she delights in baby A.
Read MoreThis newborn session took place at Eliza & Isaac’s home, just days before they moved into a new place because of a job transition. It felt really special to document them in the place where they had prepared for their daughter Freya’s birth and welcomed her into the world. The session also created this sweet opportunity for them to slow down, take a breath, and have a calm moment together as a family.
Read MoreNicole and Matt are a wonderful, creative couple, and I have had the chance to journey with them through several chapters of life! I met Nicole during our time together at St. Olaf College, and I had the joy of photographing Nicole and Matt’s whimsical wedding day, which was a blast. Nicole and Matt now have entered another chapter of life as homeowners and as new parents to their sweet son Parker, so I was thrilled when they asked me to photograph their growing family in their new home.

Read MoreI really enjoy documenting the new relationships a baby brings to a family and capturing the sweetness in this chapter of life. When approaching a newborn session, everything is on baby time and very different than the pre-planned structure and fast-moving timeline of a wedding day. It is a really slow, calm, and relaxing process that generally lasts about four hours.
